About Us
The National Qigong Association (NQA) is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization and the premier membership community for Qigong in America. We serve as an umbrella for all groups, schools, and enthusiasts, whether Western or Eastern, ancient or modern. Our mission is to promote the understanding of Qigong for present and future generations without bias or prejudice. Through education, certification, and community events, we support those who share in the practice of Qigong.
Our Origin Story
The NQA began in the early 1990s when Qigong was only starting to gain recognition in the West. Author and acupuncturist Jim MacRitchie, along with his partner Damaris Jarboux, saw the need to connect teachers, students, and healers across the country. From their center in Boulder, Colorado, they compiled and freely distributed the International Chi Kung/Qigong Directory, a resource linking more than sixty practitioners nationwide.

In 1996, with the help of Berkley Freeman, Roger Jahnke, Russell DesMarais, and other pioneers, a group of teachers and practitioners gathered in Boulder to officially incorporate the National Qigong Association. Built on principles of inclusiveness and equality, the organization became a home for practitioners from every lineage and style.

Twelve individuals signed the founding documents, establishing the NQA as a nonprofit organization: Jim MacRitchie, Gunther Weil, Russell DesMarais, Damaris Jarboux, Berkley Freeman, Roger Jahnke, Mark Johnson, Richard Leirer, Jesse Dammann, Hong Fei Lin, Shantika Lammanno, Thompson Chen, and Ellen Raskin.

From that moment, the Chi Ball began to roll, and it continues today as the NQA grows, educates, and connects new generations of Qigong teachers and practitioners.

“There was a clear need to connect the teachers with the students, and the practitioners with the patients.”
