In this talk, Matthew Komelski will focus on the etymology of the character Qi, the concept of Qi as an everyday phenomenon, and the importance of attending to our direct experience of qi as we go about our day. This gives us endless opportunities to build "gong" mastery. As a young adult living and training in East Asia and the Pacific Rim, he often struggled to make sense of concepts like qi, xin, yi, or gong when they were translated into English. Direct translations often lead our minds to run wild, filling in the gaps with imaginative interpretations that can distract us from the fundamental anchors that facilitate mastery.

Matthew was incredibly fortunate to study with teachers who helped him open his senses, notice his emotional states (both internally and toward other living things), observe his states of focus and mental clarity, and become more mindful of his everyday qi. Their patient guidance has remained his constant companion over the decades, helping him face new challenges, develop new insights, and refine his approach to training to meet his current needs.

He also welcomes discussion of how participants experience Qi in their lives and looks forward to a meaningful exchange for mutual benefit.
